Essential Remodeling & Building Tasks: When NOT to DIY!
As the founder of Home Renovation School, where I teach people how to design, build, renovate, and manage their dream home projects, I’m all about empowering homeowners. That said, there are crucial steps during the building process where you absolutely need to bring in a pro. These steps aren’t just about getting things done—they’re about getting them done right to ensure your project’s success.
Let’s break it down.
1. The Foundation: The Groundwork for Your Home
The foundation is exactly what it sounds like—the most critical structural element of your home. This isn’t the place to experiment or cut corners. Properly engineered plans by a licensed structural and civil engineer are non-negotiable. Mistakes here can lead to structural instability, costly repairs, or even a complete rebuild. Trust me, you don’t want this on your DIY list.
2. Framing: The Framework for Your Home
Framing sets the stage for your walls, doors, and windows. It’s essential that it’s done with precision—perfectly level and square. Why? Because if your framing is off, your walls will be too, and you’ll face endless headaches when it’s time to hang sheetrock or install doors and windows. Crooked walls and uneven doorframes are not the look anyone is going for, especially in a dream home.
3. Safety-First Trades: HVAC, Plumbing, and Electrical
Certain trades require licensed professionals for a reason. HVAC, plumbing, and electrical systems are complex and critical for the safety and functionality of your home. In Home Renovation School, I teach students the basics of these trades so they can confidently communicate with their subcontractors. Understanding what your pros are doing—and why—is key to managing your project successfully.
4. Doors, Windows, and Roofing: Protecting Your Home
Installing doors, windows, and roofing might seem straightforward, but these elements are your first defense against water intrusion and other environmental issues. While these are scopes you can learn to DIY, I recommend having an expert guide you through your first installation. A poorly installed window, door, or roof can lead to water leaks, mold, and expensive repairs down the road. Getting it right the first time is always worth it.
Pro Tip: Be an Active Participant
When you’re managing your own home build or renovation, take an active role. Be present for city inspections, ask questions, watch, and learn. Your presence signals to subcontractors that you’re engaged and expecting top-notch work. Plus, it’s a fantastic opportunity to expand your knowledge—something we’re all about at Home Renovation School.
